Crane Wire Rope Selection: The Technical Guide to ISO 16625 Compliance

Selecting a steel wire rope for crane operations involves more than matching a diameter. According to ISO 16625, the process requires a rigorous proof of competence considering fatigue strength, radial support, and rotation stability. As an ISO-certified factory, Solite provides this guide to help procurement engineers optimize safety and service life.

1. The Core Variable: Design Factor (Zp)

The Design Factor (Zp) is the ratio between the Minimum Breaking Force (MBF) and the maximum static tension in the rope. ISO 16625 defines different Zp values based on the mechanism class (T1 to T9).

2. D/d Ratio: The Silent Fatigue Killer

The ratio of the pitch diameter of the Drum/Sheave (D) to the nominal diameter of the Rope (d) is critical. A small D/d ratio increases bending stress, significantly shortening the rope's fatigue life.

D/d Ratio Impact on Service Life Solite Recommendation
Low (< 18) Severe bending fatigue, rapid wire breaks. Use highly flexible 6x36 class.
Standard (20-25) Standard fatigue life for general hoists. 6x19 IWRC or 6x36 IWRC.
High (> 30) Optimized fatigue life, low internal stress. Compacted 35Wx7 for high-speed.

3. Fleet Angle & Spooling Stability

The fleet angle should ideally be between 0.5° and 2° for smooth drums. Excessive fleet angles lead to heavy abrasion against the sheave flange and poor spooling on the drum.

4. Selecting Between 6x36 and 35Wx7

Compacted vs. Common Stock

As shown in the cross-section comparison, Solite Compacted Strand Rope (Right) offers a much higher fill factor and a smoother outer surface. This results in:

  • Higher breaking strength in the same diameter.
  • Reduced internal friction and longer fatigue life.
  • Superior resistance to drum crushing.

While 6x36 is a versatile powerhouse, Compacted Strand Rope is the industry standard for high-lift tower cranes and port machinery due to its superior durability.

🛑 CRITICAL SAFETY ALERT: Rotation-resistant ropes are highly sensitive to fleet angles. Exceeding 1.5° can cause internal core distortion or "birdcaging," leading to catastrophic failure.
